Bay City News Foundation is turning three!

The San Francisco Bay Area is a hub of artistic expression, attracting artists, writers and musicians from around the globe to live, work and create. At LocalNewsMatters.org, a free site supported by Bay City News Foundation, we celebrate the region’s creativity each week with coverage you won’t find anywhere else.

While most of our journalism during the last three years has been focused on the urgent and important challenges facing our region, we know that creative endeavors are an important reflection of our community. This is the fun stuff, the visionary stuff, the inspiring stuff. From new plays to free concerts to creative mashups that mix genres and surprise audiences, our team of journalists bring the best of the Bay to you — before, during and after the pandemic, which sidelined so many venues and institutions. Below are some highlights to give you a taste of what we have created.

Our Arts & Entertainment section highlights artists, musicians and performances — whether in-person or virtual. And you can get the weekend’s “Best Bets,” “Pass the Remote” film highlights and arts features in our weekly culture newsletter delivered straight to your inbox each Thursday. One of the pleasures of living in the Bay Area is the region’s rich range of arts and culture, and we sort through the dozens of offerings to bring you the novel and the noteworthy.

Recently, we added a Library Information Hub and a Bay City Books section to highlight new releases, author interviews and events that bring attention to the rich literary tradition of the Bay Area. We also added a cartoon gallery, Bay City Sketchbook by Joe Dworetzky, to bring alternative storytelling to our readers.

For more inspiration, our “Inspire Me” section provides hope by showcasing the remarkable volunteers, first responders and everyday heroes and nonprofits who are stepping up to serve our communities, especially needed during the pandemic.

With your help, we can continue to share these stories about the wit, wisdom and generosity of our most creative community members. We hope you’ll consider making a tax-deductible donation today.

With gratitude,

Katherine Ann Rowlands
