Bay City News Foundation is turning three!

What’s next? A lot. As our free LocalNewsMatters.org site has grown, so has our staff, our coverage and our geographic footprint. Bay City News Foundation, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that fuels this work, is fortunate to have a talented staff that allows us to meet our ambitious goals to meet the information needs of the San Francisco Bay Area — a fascinating, complex and innovative place, full of diverse people, institutions and stories.

Since our founding in 2018, we’ve covered the nine counties of the Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma), from stories as varied as environmental restoration in Napa and approaches to solving homelessness in Santa Clara County and disparities in educational attainment across the region.

As we celebrate our three-year anniversary, we’re bringing three new counties into our geographic footprint: Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Joaquin. We are keeping an eye on the drought, housing and agriculture trends in these areas, as well as how public agencies are managing resources to serve residents who are struggling with economic fallout from the pandemic.

We know that the incredible diversity of the Bay Area deserves more than a one-size-fits-all approach to news coverage. With your help, Local News Matters can hire even more reporters and editors who reflect the communities they serve, from the urban areas of Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose to the more rural areas of Salinas, Watsonville and Stockton.

Thank you for making local news a priority. Bay City News is here to stay and we have proven that our hybrid model works: a nonprofit newsroom combined with our affiliated newswire for distribution to other media is a powerful combination. We look forward to sharing more details of our expanded coverage with you soon and delivering important news to you via our weekly newsletters.

Help us expand our footprint in the region, and continue our reliable coverage on issues across the Bay Area by making a gift today.

With gratitude,

Katherine Ann Rowlands
